Premium Tall Fescue Sod Built for a Better-Looking Lawn
Black Beauty Tall Fescue is Quality Turf’s newest premium fescue sod and replaces our previous Quality Plus Fescue.
This is not bagged Black Beauty grass seed. It is mature, farm-grown sod produced at our San Jacinto farm and harvested fresh for your project.
What makes Black Beauty different is its specific five-cultivar blend. It combines three turf-type tall fescues with Kentucky Bluegrass and Hybrid Texas Bluegrass to create the full, dark-green look homeowners expect from premium fescue while adding characteristics selected for drought performance, durability, and residential use.
What’s in Black Beauty Fescue?
30% Soft Blade Tall Fescue
30% Tectonic Tall Fescue
30% Thunderbolt Tall Fescue
5% Krypton Kentucky Bluegrass
5% Solar Hybrid Texas Bluegrass
That gives you a lawn that is 90% premium turf-type tall fescue with 10% complementary bluegrass varieties.
Why Homeowners Choose Black Beauty
Naturally Dark-Green Color
Black Beauty tall fescue genetics are selected for naturally darker color, helping create the rich green appearance many homeowners want without relying only on heavy fertilization for color.
Deep-Rooting Fescue Genetics
Black Beauty tall fescues are bred to develop extensive root systems. Deeper roots can help the grass reach moisture farther into the soil and cope better with periods of heat and dry weather when the lawn is properly established and maintained.
Waxy Leaf Coating
A naturally waxy leaf surface is another characteristic associated with Black Beauty genetics. It helps slow moisture loss from the plant during stressful conditions.
That does not make Black Beauty drought-proof or eliminate summer irrigation. It remains a cool-season lawn and requires proper watering, especially during Southern California heat.
Sun and Partial-Shade Flexibility
Tall fescue is well adapted to both sunny and partially shaded locations. UC California turf guidance rates tall fescue as having moderate shade tolerance and moderate-high heat tolerance. UC IPM
That makes Black Beauty useful for many residential yards that contain a mix of open lawn, trees, walls, and afternoon shade.
Built for Everyday Residential Use
Tall fescue has good wear characteristics, while the Kentucky and Hybrid Texas bluegrass components add rhizomatous growth that can help fill minor damaged areas over time. It should not be described as completely self-repairing, but the bluegrass component provides recovery potential that a pure bunch-type tall fescue lawn does not have.
Is Black Beauty Right for Your Yard?
Black Beauty is a strong choice if you want a lush, traditional lawn with dark-green color, your property receives sun or partial shade, and you prefer a cool-season grass that can maintain good color through Southern California’s cooler months.
It is particularly useful for homeowners who want more shade flexibility than Bermudagrass provides.
If your lawn receives intense direct sun all day and maximum drought performance or reduced summer water pressure is your top priority, Endarra 81 Bermuda may be the better grass to compare before buying.
If your yard has substantial shade and you prefer a warm-season grass, St. Augustine may deserve consideration.
