What Is Black Beauty Fescue Sod?

Black Beauty Fescue Sod is Quality Turf’s current fescue sod: a cool-season blend of 90% turf-type tall fescue and 10% combined Kentucky and hybrid Texas bluegrass. It’s grown and cut fresh at our San Jacinto farm, giving Southern California lawns a refined, dark-green look. It replaces our former Quality Plus Fescue.

What’s actually in the blend?

Black Beauty Fescue is a five-cultivar blend built for Southern California yards. The mix is 90% turf-type tall fescue and 10% combined Kentucky and hybrid Texas bluegrass. That balance is what gives the lawn its deep green color and even, upright growth.

It’s a cool-season grass, so it holds color well through the milder months and, with the right watering, stays attractive year-round. The blade texture is fine to medium soft underfoot without looking coarse.

One point to be clear on: this is sod, not seed. You receive mature, living turf harvested from our farm and rolled straight onto prepared soil. There’s no waiting weeks for anything to germinate.

Is Black Beauty Fescue the same as “Black Beauty” grass seed?

No. There’s a nationally sold bagged grass seed that shares the “Black Beauty” name, and the two aren’t the same product. Quality Turf sells Black Beauty Fescue sod fresh-cut rolls of established grass grown at our San Jacinto farm.

If you want an instant lawn you can enjoy within weeks, sod is what you’re after. Searched for seed by mistake? Our team is happy to explain the difference before you order.

What does Black Beauty Fescue look like once it’s down?

Expect a dark green, uniform lawn with a tidy, upright habit. Because turf-type tall fescue makes up most of the blend, the lawn reads as lush and full rather than wispy, and the bluegrass helps keep the color rich.

Like any cool-season lawn in a warm climate, it looks its best when it’s watered consistently and mowed at the right height. It’s a living, growing surface not a set-and-forget one.

How do you care for Black Beauty Fescue sod?

Fescue is a cool-season grass, so summer heat is the season that asks the most of it. A few basics keep it healthy:

  • Water deeply and less often. Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to grow down, which helps the lawn cope with heat. New sod needs much more frequent water for the first couple of weeks.
  • Mow around 2 to 2.5 inches. Leaving it slightly taller in peak summer helps the lawn hold moisture.
  • Feed seasonally. A balanced fertilizer during the growing seasons supports color and density.
  • Consider fall overseeding. Cool-season lawns often benefit from a fall refresh to stay thick.
